A place to ‘mobilize’

The influence of the club extended beyond entertainment and into activism, Knowles said.

As a young adult, Knowles vividly remembers a night at the club when Fryar made everyone stop dancing so they could meet Leni Sitnik, an activist who would go on to become Asheville’s first woman mayor in 1997.

“Art got up on the stage and got us all wild children to stop dancing and he brought Leni Sitnik up,” she said.

Whether dancing the night away at a gay club or mingling with locals at a gay-friendly bar, you’ll have the chance to make memories and create lasting connections.

So, don’t be afraid to leave your comfort zone and explore the gay and gay-friendly nightlife in Asheville. Asheville also hosts queer film, arts, and community programming throughout the year, plus regular drag and karaoke nights that can feel like mini-events on their own.

Whether you visit their South Slope tasting room or venture to the winery, you’re in for a treat. You’ll be glad you did!
