Sure, some of them are more interested in your cash than your body, but there is still plenty of fun to have in this popular gay sauna in Santo Domingo.

On Saturday, there is an open bar with strippers, and different prices and events throughout the week are listed on their website.

Gender-bending and breaking every rule in the book, they take place twice a year and are convinced as a safe space for everyone to just be while bringing together different spectrums of the Dominican Republic LGBT community.

Local boys have been known to wait for guests outside the hotel. The attitudes of the Dominican public have changed in the past few years, allowing acceptance and tolerance toward cultural, sexual and religious diversity. High-level rooms have spectacular views and modern design, and there is a Silver Sun Gallery downstairs if you need to get some shopping done.

Another important topic worth mentioning is the great advancement in the Dominican Republic regarding human rights and diversity. Many clubs also have gay nights, so we recommend starting your night off at the Parque Duarte, a gathering spot for young and fashionable LGBT people to get all the latest gossip.

We have even heard the sauna/gym can get a bit cruisy, though we can’t confirm.

Taking place annually in July, the streets are covered in rainbow flags, and the LGBT community makes a rare show of numbers in public. For this reason, we advise no kissing or hand-holding in public, but you are unlikely to experience any open discrimination at hotels, restaurants or bars.

The macho culture imported from Spain and seen all over Latin America is pervasive here, which, combined with a hidden but vibrant LGBT scene, means progress toward equality is slow-moving at best. 

There is still a long way to go, but an organization such as RevASA are paving the way, forcing the government toward legislative action and running LGBT workshops and support services. Gay life in Santo Domingo is largely centered in the historic Zona Colonial, which is home to the highest concentration of queer-friendly nightlife in the city.

To really get a taste of the gay scene in Santo Domingo, you just have to attend one of the twice-annual Draguéalo Parties.

A quiet outdoor pool and a fitness room, plus in-house massage services. If you don’t have time to explore this beautiful country more, at least you can escape the chaos of the city for a day!
